Painted Peel

    Wax Stain Layered & Distressed

Decorative finishes for wood and metal furniture, kitchen, bath, entertainment cabinets, and accessories. Course includes (1) preparation of wood and multi-density fiber board (MDF) with reference to distress techniques, (2) preparation of metal surfaces,  (3) the use of electric distressing and finishing tools, (4) use of wood carving tools and 'mimic' tools for ageing and distressing, (5) preparing oil painted surfaces for water base product adhesion. The student is introduced to water base mediums from various forefront manufactures to accomplish aged, country, and contemporary finishes with an emphasis on layering. Course offers both European and domestic layered staining procedures using water base staining gels and synthetic waxes for a rich deep natural look and feel. Included is the use of foil for both traditional and contempoary finishes. The techniques learned enable the student to do simple marble and stone replication, visual and physical textures, visual (painted distress) and physical distress, glazing, numerous crackle techniques, pickling or liming, mica metallic, interference (iridescent) colors, masque techniques, stenciling and raised stenciling. Definitive offers replication of Modern Master Metal Patina Effect finishes without the use of detrimental chemicals and with greater control and creativity.

Varigate Peeling Thick Crackle

    Rust: Texture, Paint No Chemicals

Employing and expanding upon the techniques of first three days of the session, the student will do multiple layers of crackle; variegated crackle; bleeding, peeling and chipped crackle; worn-away and chipped paint, high gloss sandwich varnish; soft-to-the-touch texture finishes; texture inlay; embedded pattern, dimensional gel medium finishes (ie. snake); layered staining; patina and chemical responsive (despersoid) mediums. These finishes produce some of the most intricate and exquisite furniture finishes extremely saleable by the lone artisan creating complex finishes for sophisticated clients.  Finishes will be performed on wood or multi-density fiber board ( MDF) crown molding and large door-sized polyboard. Various carved moldings will also be used to simulate carved pieces of furniture. Maximum enrollment is eight (8) students.

GILDING & SIMULATED METAL FINISHES

GILDING: COMPOSITION LEAF PLUS METAL SIMULATION (TWO DAYS)

See Schedule and Fees for dates and cost

Prerequiste: None. The course goal is to provide a more profitable creative approach to gilding and metal simulation. Gilding is the application of either precious or non-precious metal to an object. This course provides the creative forms of composition leaf (Dutch Metal) application, gold, silver, aluminum, copper, and variegated leaf.  It also provides the decorative uses of Mica Powder flash gilding. However, Definitive takes the student beyond accent gilding. Various total-surface gilding or metal simulation techniques will be included. Non-toxic metal effects are created with color-washing, toning, glazing, nuance coloration, aging and crackling techniques. We duplicate Modern Master's Metal Effect finishes using paint and glazes allowing greater control of pattern, color  and without toxic chemicals. Formulas for numerous patina finishes are shared.  Stencils are used in some finishes.  Applications are for furniture and some wall finishes. Course fee includes gilding tools, supply kit, custom-made suede block, and a French double-sided gilding knife. Maximum enrollment is eight (8) students.
